First post here. My partner and I are Rent is about $925/month for a decent place. It's a a mid-size city city with about 137K people. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

I've been here 10 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Austin about 9 years ago. The main reasons were weather and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Four distinct seasons
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are affordable, gas is solid.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Meadowbrook. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely solid and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (East) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is cost of living. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
