Centereach quality of life -am I missing something?

First post here. Military spouse here. The median home value here is around $471,300, which is pretty steep. With a population of 31,501, Centereach is a smaller city. Homes are going for about $471,300 on average. Rent is about $2,398/month for a decent place. Median household income is $127,106, which feels pretty solid for the area. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Pros:
- Easy commute
- Good healthcare facilities
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Chain restaurants dominate
What neighborhoods would you suggest? The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I work in manufacturing here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is excellent. Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 32, moved here 8 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The outdoor recreation situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for remote workers. average vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
