Honest thoughts on life in Centereach

Hi all, I grew up here but left for a while. Poverty rate is 3.0%, which is pretty low. It's a a smaller city city with about 31,501 people. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Bought a house here in 2022 and I love the pace of life here. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Denver about 2 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are competitive, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to Dallas it's underrated.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in North. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
