Things Central Islip needs to improve

Hey everyone, I'm originally from Cincinnati and Crime rate is something to consider -Central Islip sits at 22.0 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 3.7%, which is pretty low. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Does this match your experience? It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Tampa about 9 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Four distinct seasons
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Hope this helps!.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I love the pace of life here. Compared to Atlanta it's improving.
