Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in West. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in retail. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Riverside area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 3 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Oak Park. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in retail. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Thai.
No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Portland about 6 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are developing, gas is average.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Good luck with whatever you decide..
