Alright, The unemployment rate is 2.9%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

I'm a project manager and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. The community is hit or miss and there's always something going on.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from New York about 2 years ago. The main reasons were work and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Four distinct seasons
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Winters are long and cold
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are competitive, gas is improving.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I work in marketing here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is pretty good. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Public transit is solid here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 26, moved here 13 years ago from Austin. I've lived in West and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Affordable housing options
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Limited shopping options
3. The job market situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for retirees. decent vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 3 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
