I've been looking at the stats and Champaign shows a violent crime rate of 930 per 100K which is above average. But stats don't always tell the full story. For people who actually live there — do you feel safe? Are there areas to avoid?
I'm especially interested in hearing from retirees.

Weather is the biggest factor for us. Four seasons are nice, not too extreme either way.

Public transit needs work but they're investing in it. Should improve in next few years.

Downtown is overrated and overpriced. The suburbs offer way better value.

Traffic is the worst part honestly. But if you live near work it's fine.

I'd add that healthcare options are better than most cities this size. Otherwise spot on!

Rent tip: look for places in October-November. Prices drop and there's more availability.

Great post! One thing I'd mention is the west side tends to be more affordable. Makes a big difference.

Totally agree with this. I've been here 5 years and my experience is very similar.

For families, I'd recommend looking at Maple Heights. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.
