Been living here since 2006. Rent is about $1,103/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $199,700 on average. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The weather takes some getting used to.

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say I'm still on the fence after all this time. The healthcare is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in Oak Park for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good healthcare facilities
- The weather scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Feel free to reach out with questions..

We moved here with our family and it's been a really good experience overall. Schools in Midtown area are tough. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Highland) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Pine Hills. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in marketing. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a pharmacist, 33, moved here 10 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in South and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Winters are long and cold
3. The job market situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for retirees. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $80K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely underrated and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Fairview) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 5 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
