Top 5 things I love about Channahon

First post here. Military spouse here. Average temperature is around 51--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $298,000 on average. It's a a small town city with about 13,854 people. The median home value here is around $298,000, which seems about average. Household incomes average around $121,458 in Channahon. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The weather takes some getting used to. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Low crime in most areas
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Far from major airports
There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Uptown) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a contractor and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. The community is underrated and there's always something going on.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Uptown. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
