Moving to Chapel Hill with kids -good idea?

Hi all, I'm originally from Las Vegas and Household incomes average around $85,825 in Chapel Hill. Property taxes are high but you get good services. What do you all think? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely solid and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Eastside) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Dating scene is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 38, moved here 15 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Uptown and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Limited shopping options
3. The school system situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for singles. decent vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Downtown area are average. Kids love it here.

I've lived in Highland for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- The school system scene is improving

The downsides:
- Can feel isolated
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
