How much do you pay for rent in Charleston?

Hey folks, Median household income is $90,038, which feels pretty solid for the area. Rent is about $1,632/month for a decent place. The suburbs are where most families end up. Anyone in a similar situation?

Public transit is decent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Portland about 3 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are growing, gas is improving.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Bought a house here in 2019 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 53, moved here 8 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Uptown and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The school system situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for singles. decent vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I have mixed feelings honestly. Happy to answer more specific questions..

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is housing market. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..
