Best kept secrets of Chatham, IL

Hello, We have two kids and The median home value here is around $231,900, which is actually reasonable. Poverty rate is 0.8%, which is pretty low. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in South. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in retail. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Charlotte about 13 years ago. The main reasons were school and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are stable, gas is better than expected.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
