Grocery stores in Chicago Heights -recommendations?
Hi all, I'm a college student here and It's a a smaller city city with about 26,938 people. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Any advice would be great.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 15 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

I've lived in Riverside for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Four distinct seasons
- The cost of living scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Rising rent and home prices
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely better than expected and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Fairview) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is surprisingly good.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a data analyst, 27, moved here 14 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Uptown and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The pet-friendliness situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for retirees. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $60K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in tech. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

I've been in Midtown for 11 years. Moved from Miami for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.
**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. tech is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is solid - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Midtown schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Property taxes are high. And housing market can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from San Francisco about 1 years ago. The main reasons were weather and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of new development happening
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are manageable, gas is solid.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
