I've been here for 14 years and Median household income is $75,134, which feels about average for the area. The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely average and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Meadowbrook. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Raleigh about 4 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Affordable housing options
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are pricey, gas is decent.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is public transit. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've lived in Uptown for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Lots of new development happening
- The outdoor recreation scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for young professionals. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 7 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Maple Ridge side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely tough and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Midtown) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

Came here for cost of living and stayed because it exceeded my expectations. The dating scene is honestly decent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
