Been meaning to post this. Born and raised Chicago. Never left. Crime rate at 943.2/100K residents is something to {crime_feel}. The suburbs vs city debate here is real.

Alright, I'm going to write the reply I wish someone had written for me when I was researching Chicago.
Background: 36, newlywed, moved from Kansas City 2 years ago for school. Currently in Lakeview.
**Housing:**
The market is solid right now. We went with Lakeview because close to work. Paid /mo starting out, now at /mo. If I could do it again, I'd look at Wicker Park - it's up-and-coming and the value is better.
**Work:**
hospitality jobs are tough here. I was worried coming from Kansas City but the market is mixed. Salary-wise, expect competitive for the cost of living.
**Social Life:**
This was my biggest worry. First 10 months were tough. Then I found my people through a kickball league. Now I have a solid group. Chicago people are reserved at first once you break through.
**Day to Day:**
- Groceries: reasonable
- Traffic: depends entirely on your commute route
- Dining out: amazing variety
- Entertainment: could be better
**Would I move here again?**
The suburbs vs city debate here is real.. For young professionals, I'd give it a 9/10.

I'll give you a thorough answer since I've been through this exact situation.
I moved to Rogers Park from Seattle about 5 years ago. Initially I questioned my decision. But after settling in, Downtown has improved dramatically since I first moved here..
A few things I'd recommend:
- Check out Rogers Park and Andersonville for housing
- Get a car if you don't have one - transit is limited
- Check out the local brewery scene
The biggest adjustment was job market. The food scene in {hood} is honestly incredible.. Overall I'd give Chicago a 7/10 for retirees.

Not to be negative but the nightlife is overrated. I still like living here overall though. Just keeping it real.
