Curious what people think. I'm a college student here and You can expect to pay around $1,217 for rent here. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Does this match your experience? It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 7 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Came here for quality of life and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The housing market is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely tough and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Highland) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
