Rent vs buy in Clayton -what makes sense?

Hey, Just moved here 4 months ago and You can expect to pay around $1,204 for rent here. Average temperature is around 55--F, so expect cold winters. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's exactly what I was looking for. Compared to Pittsburgh it's excellent.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 10 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in Downtown for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good internet infrastructure
- The healthcare scene is better than expected

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited high-paying job options

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. Happy to answer more specific questions..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's been a really good experience overall. Internet is hit or miss in most areas.

Used to live on the Highland side, now on the Cedar Grove side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 1 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
