Not sure if this has been asked before, but I've been here for 20 years and Average temperature is around 73--F, so it's warm year-round. Rent is about $1,774/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $368,600 on average. The unemployment rate is 3.3%, which is pretty low. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a real estate agent, 41, moved here 7 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in East and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Property taxes are high
3. The walkability situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for couples. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$130K here.
