Just moved here 17 months ago and Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. Median household income is $54,301, which feels on the lower side for the area. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Let me know your thoughts. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 8 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from New York about 12 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Nightlife is limited
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are wild, gas is solid.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I work in healthcare here and it's been a really good experience overall. The job market for my field is tough. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I'm a sales manager and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community is decent and there's always something going on.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Midtown. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in tech. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Definitely worth checking out..

We moved here with our family and I have mixed feelings honestly. Schools in Fairview area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.
