What I wish I knew before living in Clinton

Military spouse here. Homes are going for about $121,300 on average. Average temperature is around 60--F, so the weather is moderate. It's a a small town city with about 2,506 people. Poverty rate is 18.3%, which is higher than I expected. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Any advice would be great. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely improving and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Midtown) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
