First post here. My family moved here when I was a kid. Median household income is $74,688, which feels about average for the area. Crime rate is something to consider -Columbia Heights sits at 290.8 per 100K. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Worth the trade-offs? Any help is appreciated. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely excellent and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Tampa about 11 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is pretty good.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is walkability. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've lived in Downtown for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The pet-friendliness scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Hope this helps!.
