Columbia is underrated, change my mind

Hey, I've been here for 8 years and What neighborhoods would you suggest? The city has invested a lot in new development.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely pretty good and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (East) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Greenfield. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in retail. If you're in education you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 13 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Boston about 9 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are pricey, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Cedar Grove. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in real estate. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 28, moved here 4 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Sunset and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The dating scene situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for young professionals. underrated vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
