Housing in Columbia compared to Portland

First post here. Median household income is $129,173, which feels pretty solid for the area. Poverty rate is 4.8%, which is pretty low. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Should I be concerned? TIA! The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to. The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

The food scene here is average. Tons of great BBQ places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

I've lived in Cedar Grove for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- The public transit scene is tough

The downsides:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Used to live on the Springfield side, now on the Downtown side. Completely different vibe. it's exactly what I was looking for.

I work in marketing here and the quality of life is solid. The job market for my field is underrated. No regrets on my end..

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is weather. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Sunset. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in legal. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like seafood.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Bought a house here in 2023 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone about the same since then.
