Should I move to Columbia or stay in Portland?

Been living here since 2006. Crime rate is something to consider — Columbia sits at 320.8 per 100K. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What neighborhoods would you suggest? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Maple Ridge for 13 years. Moved from LA for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
construction is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is excellent - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Maple Ridge schools are average. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not a lot of cultural diversity. Homeless population growing downtown. And outdoor recreation can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 9/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Meadowbrook. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in retail. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Hope this helps!.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from Tampa about 7 years ago. The main reasons were work and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are manageable, gas is underrated.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Hope this helps!.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is food scene. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I love the pace of life here. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've been in Greenfield for 4 years. Moved from Pittsburgh for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. government is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is decent - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Greenfield schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Limited shopping options. And dating scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 8/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 4 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Hot take but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. I know a lot of people disagree but after 11 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely better than expected and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Midtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely decent and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (South) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:

People: Generally decent. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
