Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Household incomes average around $61,204 in Columbia. Median household income is $61,204, which feels about average for the area. You can expect to pay around $1,092 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 1.9%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. Worth the trade-offs? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a real estate agent, 38, moved here 15 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in Eastside and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The public transit situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for couples. improving vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $90K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Bought a house here in 2018 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone about the same since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Sunset. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from San Francisco about 8 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is decent.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I work in retail here and the quality of life is solid. The job market for my field is underrated. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Eastside) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
