Cost of living reality check — Columbus

OK so I'm a remote worker and Poverty rate is 15.0%, which is around average. The median home value here is around $182,300, which is actually reasonable. With a population of 204K, Columbus is a mid-size city. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Pros:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Limited nightlife
- Not very walkable
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Homelessness issues downtown
The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 31, moved here 2 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in East and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The healthcare situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for families. improving vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
