Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 8 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in East. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in finance. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in legal. If you're in tech you might struggle.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Dallas about 15 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good healthcare facilities
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are growing, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Definitely worth checking out..
