Anyone else feel this way? I grew up here but left for a while. Crime rate is something to consider -Concord sits at 149.4 per 100K. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Any advice would be great.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 3 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Came here for retirement and stayed because it's been a really good experience overall. The healthcare is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Came here for cost of living and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The healthcare is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to LA it's hit or miss.

The food scene here is underrated. Tons of great Mediterranean places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.
