Not sure if this has been asked before, but I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 4.1%, which is about average. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. What would you do? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

As someone who grew up here, I love the pace of life here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. weather used to be much reasonable but now it's hit or miss.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 3 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Meadowbrook. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in engineering. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
Hope this helps!.

Bought a house here in 2016 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone about the same since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Eastside. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in retail. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Definitely worth checking out..

I'm a social worker and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is solid and there's always something going on.
