Considering Cottage Lake vs Dallas -help me decide

Longtime lurker here, I'm retired and Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. The median home value here is around $1,164,000, which is pretty steep. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 25, moved here 1 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in North and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The school system situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for retirees. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $60K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely excellent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Highland) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely pretty good and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Springfield) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Austin about 15 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are reasonable, gas is excellent.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Good luck with whatever you decide..
