Moving from Sacramento to Cottonwood CDP (Shasta County) next month
Am I overthinking this? Appreciate any input. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

Used to live on the North side, now on the Old Town side. Completely different vibe. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is school system. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. the quality of life is solid. Internet is solid in most areas.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if public transit matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 11 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

As someone who grew up here, I have mixed feelings honestly. A lot has changed in the past few years though. job market used to be much growing but now it's underrated.

I've been here 3 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is solid.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Bought a house here in 2019 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

I've been living here for 7 years and I'd say it's exactly what I was looking for. The dating scene is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 49, moved here 5 years ago from Boston. I've lived in West and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The cultural scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for singles. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely solid and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
