OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 35, moved here 15 years ago from Austin. I've lived in Downtown and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The safety situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for singles. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $90K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 11 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 3 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

The food scene here is tough. Tons of great farm-to-table places. it's improved dramatically in recent years.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from New York about 4 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good airport with direct flights
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are affordable, gas is underrated.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Hope this helps!.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much affordable but now it's surprisingly good.

Bought a house here in 2016 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone up a bit since then.
