Hello, We have two kids and It's a a smaller city city with about 51,000 people. You can expect to pay around $1,813 for rent here. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 4 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from San Francisco about 3 years ago. The main reasons were school and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Limited public transit options
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are established, gas is solid.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
