Hello, Military spouse here. Rent is about $1,677/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Thoughts? Appreciate any input. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Moved here from Atlanta about 2 years ago. it's not perfect but it works for me. Still getting used to dating scene but It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Background: I'm a HR manager, 25, moved here 10 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Meadowbrook and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The community vibe situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for retirees. tough vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
