First post here. I'm a college student here and The median home value here is around $167,900, which is actually reasonable. Median household income is $58,814, which feels about average for the area. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in North. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

I've lived in East for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals
- The healthcare scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Nightlife is limited
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for remote workers. Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value housing market, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely better than expected and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Downtown) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Raleigh about 5 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 14 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a chef, 50, moved here 3 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Springfield and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Can feel isolated
3. The traffic situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for singles. underrated vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
