Moving from Salt Lake City to Crest Hill next month
Random thought, My partner and I are Average temperature is around 51--F, so expect cold winters. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

As someone who grew up here, I genuinely enjoy living here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much affordable but now it's pretty good.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is underrated in most areas.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely solid and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Westside for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights
- The cultural scene scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for families. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 11 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

I've been here 8 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into running, this place is solid.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in The Heights for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Active local events and festivals
- The healthcare scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
