Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Worth the trade-offs? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in Fairview area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 1 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Fairview. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.
