I'm originally from Pittsburgh and The median home value here is around $270,600, which seems about average. You can expect to pay around $1,540 for rent here. Rent is about $1,540/month for a decent place. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. I've lived in Uptown for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- The dating scene scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for retirees. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Pine Hills. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in marketing. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (South) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely average and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Old Town) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

I've lived in Eastside for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Close to major attractions
- The cost of living scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
