Why I chose Dalton over bigger cities

Hi all, Just moved here 13 months ago and Homes are going for about $203,100 on average. Household incomes average around $61,236 in Dalton. Rent is about $924/month for a decent place. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Low taxes
- Strong sense of community

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Rising rent prices
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homelessness issues downtown
Has anyone dealt with this? The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely underrated and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Old Town) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Houston it's improving.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Portland about 5 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is challenging.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
