About Dayr al Kahf

Deir al-Kahf, auch Qasr Deir el-Kahf, selten Dayr al-Kahf, lateinisch möglicherweise Speluncae, arabisch دير الكهف, deutsch Höhlenkloster, ist ein römisches Kastell am vorderen Limes Arabiae et Palaestinae, das während des Prinzipats entstand und während der Spätantike zum Quadriburgus erweitert wurde. Trotz vieler moderner Zerstörungen gilt die Anlage auch heute noch als eine der am besten erhaltenen in Jordanien. Sie diente als Vorposten in der unwirtlichen, ariden Klimazone der Syrischen Wüste an der äußersten östlichen Grenze des römischen Reiches. Die Fortifikation wurde an einer wichtigen Militärstraße errichtet, die unter anderem vom strategisch bedeutenderen südlich gelegenen Oasenkastell Qasr al-Azraq nach Norden führte. Deir al-Kahf befindet sich in Jordanien, im Gouvernement al-Mafraq.
