My family moved here when I was a kid. Crime rate is something to consider — Dayton sits at 962.1 per 100K. Median household income is $43,454, which feels on the lower side for the area. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Is this normal for Dayton? Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I've lived in Highland for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options
- The housing market scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Happy to answer more specific questions..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I work in healthcare here and it's been a really good experience overall. The job market for my field is underrated. No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Cedar Grove. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in legal. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 10 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in retail. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
