Just moved to Dayton, any tips?

Hey everyone, Rent is about $866/month for a decent place.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to Nashville it's improving.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 15 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's exactly what I was looking for. Internet is improving in most areas.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a contractor, 42, moved here 14 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Springfield and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The nightlife situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for young professionals. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

The food scene here is challenging. Tons of great Italian places. it was the best decision I ever made.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from San Diego about 15 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..
