What I wish I knew before living in De Pere

Random thought, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and With a population of 25,368, De Pere is a smaller city.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely underrated and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Fairview) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from San Diego about 1 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- Lots of new development happening

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are established, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 38, moved here 1 years ago from New York. I've lived in Westside and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Summers can be brutally hot
3. The public transit situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $60K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely solid and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (South) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Bugs and humidity in summer.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- The housing market scene is excellent

The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for singles. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 14 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..
