Best kept secrets of Decatur, IL

Been meaning to ask this. I'm a teacher here and You can expect to pay around $796 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 5.0%, which is about average. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. What do you all think? Any help is appreciated.

I've lived in Cedar Grove for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Decent public transit for the size
- The cultural scene scene is improving

The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for retirees. Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely tough and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Uptown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Used to live on the Cedar Grove side, now on the Uptown side. Completely different vibe. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Came here for school and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The walkability is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in South. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in education. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Indian.

No regrets on my end..

We moved here with our family and I genuinely enjoy living here. Schools in East area are tough. Kids love it here.

the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Strong sense of community
- The cost of living scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Happy to answer more specific questions..
