Is Decatur worth moving to in 2026?

So, It's a a smaller city city with about 70,368 people. You can expect to pay around $796 for rent here. The median home value here is around $97,300, which is actually reasonable. The unemployment rate is 5.0%, which is about average. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Thoughts? Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. housing market used to be much established but now it's surprisingly good.

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is weather. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely average and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Pine Hills for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Diverse dining options
- The walkability scene is solid

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've lived in Greenfield for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- The pet-friendliness scene is excellent

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Definitely worth checking out..

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's exactly what I was looking for. Property values have gone about the same since then.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is outdoor recreation. it's exactly what I was looking for. Worth doing your research before committing.
