Been meaning to ask this. I'm a 53-year-old software engineer and Rent is about $1,914/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 75--F, so it's warm year-round. The city has invested a lot in new development. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. What neighborhoods would you suggest? Any help is appreciated. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Came here for work and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The school system is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 1 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into running, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Background: I'm a accountant, 39, moved here 7 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Pine Hills and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The healthcare situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for remote workers. tough vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$150K here.
