The good and bad of living in Derby

OK so I work in healthcare and The unemployment rate is 2.7%, which is pretty low. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Anyone in a similar situation?

As someone who grew up here, the quality of life is solid. A lot has changed in the past few years though. outdoor recreation used to be much pricey but now it's excellent.

I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The housing market is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Baltimore it's solid.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 15 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been here 2 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely underrated and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2024 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone about the same since then.
