Best companies to work for in Des Moines?

Born and raised here. You can expect to pay around $1,054 for rent here. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. What do you all think? The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

As someone who grew up here, the quality of life is solid. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much reasonable but now it's decent.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is traffic. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Old Town for 5 years. Moved from Nashville for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
construction is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is decent - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Old Town schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Bugs and humidity in summer. Far from beaches/mountains. And cost of living can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 7/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Westside. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in marketing. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
