Best neighborhoods in Des Moines

Hey folks, Been living here since 2010. Homes are going for about $183,700 on average. With a population of 212K, Des Moines is a mid-size city. Rent is about $1,054/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $183,700, which is actually reasonable. Crime rate is something to consider — Des Moines sits at 712.1 per 100K. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Growing food scene
- Low crime in most areas
- Low taxes
- Easy commute

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Limited cultural events
- Chain restaurants dominate

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Fairview. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in retail. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 4 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is underrated.

I work in government here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is underrated. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I'm a pharmacist and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is tough and there's always something going on.
