Anyone else feel this way? Poverty rate is 11.1%, which is around average. Average temperature is around 53°F, so expect cold winters. Household incomes average around $63,966 in Des Moines. You can expect to pay around $1,054 for rent here. The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Should I be concerned? The city has invested a lot in new development. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I love the pace of life here. Internet is tough in most areas.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Chicago about 11 years ago. The main reasons were weather and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is improving.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Eastside for 11 years. Moved from Phoenix for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.
**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Eastside schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Not a lot of cultural diversity. And job market can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 8/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
